Middlesbrough face Chris Gunter battle as other clubs monitor Reading defender
Boro will step up the chase for Chris Gunter this week - but they face a battle to land him. Garry Monk hopes a move for the Reading right-back can be pushed through quickly before he takes his squad to a warm-weather training camp Portugal next Sunday.
The seasoned Wales defender is understood to have a £1m release clause in his contract and while Royals boss Jaap Stam wants to keep one of his star men if it is triggered the player will be free to talk to suitors.
Boro, who were keen on Gunter during their last spell in the Championship, are preparing to make their move for a solid and consistent player crucial to Reading’s rigid defence in their play-off push. But they face a battle with Premier League outfit Swansea also registering an interest while Championship rivals Aston Villa and Leeds are said to be watching developments.
